Would you like to know why your dog always does that certain thing? Would you like to conduct your dog and stock handling with a grin and no worries?
After 2 successful workshops run by Sean Barrett on calm stock handling methods in the Far East earlier this year the Landcare networks of East Gippsland are providing graziers with the opportunity to learn more from Sean. A two day workshop on handling working dogs and stock will be run on the 15th and 16th of September 2008. The course is subsidised by Landcare and will only cost $50 per participant.
In this practical, ‘hands on’ workshop participants will be treated to Sean’s great skill (and sense of humour) as they are guided through the essentials of training the working dog and, as the two go hand in hand, of smooth, stress free livestock movement.
There will be lots of opportunity to develop and practise these skills that are now widely recognized as enhancing the efficiency and profitability of livestock operations.
Sean, who lives in Queensland, has travelled and worked Australia wide and has learnt the secrets of the best stockmen to share with you.
Animal instincts are closely examined and special techniques that demonstrate how we, and our dogs, can interact with stock are applied to make handling easier and more efficient.
A lot of science has developed around how produce healthy livestock profitably. It has been proven that the psychological well being of livestock is important too and is influenced by the way stock are handled. A well trained working dog means calm livestock that don’t waste nervous energy thereby raising profit margins of the enterprise.
It’s also much easier on your vocal cords.
